Beyond the Banyan

Beyond the Banyan is a 10x14 watercolor original by artist Nandkishor Shinde, a sprawling banyan tree with hanging aerial roots framing a distant house, two uniformed figures walking beneath its canopy on a sunlit path.

The banyan's hanging roots are painted as thin, controlled drips of pigment, a technique that lets the tree feel genuinely alive rather than static. The house glimpsed through the canopy is kept deliberately soft and pale, staying secondary to the tree that dominates the foreground.

The scale of the tree relative to the house gives the painting real depth, the banyan clearly the older, more permanent presence. The two uniformed figures beneath the canopy suggest a school day rather than a formal event, grounding the scene in ordinary routine.

Beyond the Banyan reflects his consistent interest in ordinary village and coastal life, rendered through loose washes rather than tight, literal illustration. It belongs to a wider group of 20 watercolors from Shinde's Konkan and Pune-region work, several sharing this same loose, atmospheric technique. Alongside Beyond the Tree, it forms a pair of works centered on a single dominant, old tree rather than a wider landscape view.

Since it's on paper, a simple frame under UV-protective glass with a mount is the safest way to display it and keep the colors from drifting over time. At 10x14, it's a comfortable mid-scale piece, easy to place above furniture or within a grouped wall arrangement.

Beyond the Banyan would suit a home living or dining space, where its scale and palette can anchor the room without overwhelming it. Its quiet, everyday subject also makes it a considered gift for someone with a personal connection to the Konkan coast or Maharashtra's villages.

Shinde's watercolors favor atmosphere and light over sharp detail, letting the paper and pigment do much of the emotional work. Natural, indirect light shows the washes at their clearest; direct sun for long periods should be avoided so the paper and pigment don't fade. As a handmade original on paper, small variations in wash and edge are part of the piece rather than a flaw, consistent with how Shinde works across this collection.

Beyond the Banyan lets the tree carry the composition, the house behind it clearly secondary. The path beneath the tree draws the eye steadily back toward the house, giving the composition a clear, unhurried sense of direction. It works equally well as a standalone piece or hung near other tree-focused works from this release.
