Currents and Nets

Currents and Nets is a 10x14 watercolor original by artist Nandkishor Shinde, a weathered wooden fishing boat anchored just offshore, its rigging strung with small flags, figures wading in shallow water beside it.

The boat's rigging, strung with small flags, is picked out in fine, careful linework against the otherwise soft, atmospheric wash of the surrounding water. The figures wading beside the boat are rendered with just a few economical strokes, enough to suggest activity without overloading the composition.

The overall mood stays working and functional rather than purely scenic, the boat clearly still in active use. Small flags on the rigging add a few bright color notes against the otherwise muted, atmospheric palette of sky and water.

Currents and Nets reflects the same soft, atmospheric handling of light that runs through his other work in this collection, favoring mood over precise detail. It belongs to a wider group of 20 watercolors from Shinde's Konkan and Pune-region work, several sharing this same loose, atmospheric technique. Alongside Tied to the Bank, Boats Along the Bay, and Catching Gold, it completes this release's set of Konkan fishing scenes.

Being watercolor on paper, framing under glass with a proper mount is worth the investment; it keeps the washes from fading and protects the sheet itself. At 10x14, it's a comfortable mid-scale piece, easy to place above furniture or within a grouped wall arrangement.

Currents and Nets would suit a home living or dining space, where its scale and palette can anchor the room without overwhelming it. Its quiet, everyday subject also makes it a considered gift for someone with a personal connection to the Konkan coast or Maharashtra's villages.

Shinde's watercolors favor atmosphere and light over sharp detail, letting the paper and pigment do much of the emotional work. Natural, indirect light shows the washes at their clearest; direct sun for long periods should be avoided so the paper and pigment don't fade. As a handmade original on paper, small variations in wash and edge are part of the piece rather than a flaw, consistent with how Shinde works across this collection.

Currents and Nets stays grounded in everyday coastal work rather than pure scenery. The overall composition stays functional and grounded, more concerned with everyday coastal work than a picturesque view. It pairs naturally with its companion coastal studies, though it also holds up as a standalone piece. It's a fitting choice for anyone drawn to everyday coastal and fishing life along the Konkan shore.
