Mandir, Mist, and Morning is a 10x14 watercolor original by artist Nandkishor Shinde, a carved stone temple shrine beneath a spreading tree in an old city street, with a rickshaw, a parked car, and pedestrians passing by.
The carved stone shrine is rendered with more structural detail than the surrounding buildings, its texture picked out through careful, dry-brush work. The rickshaw and parked car are small, contemporary details that place this clearly in a working city street rather than a purely historical scene.
The overall feeling balances old and new, the shrine's history sitting comfortably within an ordinary working street. The tree's overhanging branches echo the shrine's shape below, tying the natural and built elements of the street together.
Mandir, Mist, and Morning reflects the same soft, atmospheric handling of light that runs through his other work in this collection, favoring mood over precise detail. This piece is one of 20 watercolors in the same release, drawn from Shinde's travels through Konkan villages, the coast, and Pune's countryside and city streets.
