The Mystic Seeker is a 24" x 36" acrylic original by artist Somnath Bothe. A bearded sage sits in meditation, eyes closed, his deep blue skin catching cooler and warmer light across the planes of his face, while his long white beard cascades downward across the lower half of the canvas like water falling rather than hair simply hanging still.
That waterfall-like treatment of the beard is the painting's most distinct device, individual pale strands rendered with the same flowing, directional energy usually reserved for depicting actual falling water, tying the sage's stillness to a sense of continuous, quiet movement.
Bothe sets the figure against a background broken into angular, fractured planes, like light passing through cut glass, in muted greys, tans, and pale blues that keep the setting abstract rather than placing the seeker in any literal location.
