Message

Message is a 48" x 36" acrylic original by artist Harshada Kolapkar, composed as an oversized postcard rather than a conventional group scene. Three figures, rendered as weathered bronze-and-blue silhouettes, stand at the left edge of the canvas, each one carrying or standing beside a postage stamp bearing the portrait of a historical Indian woman reformer.

The stamps themselves are painted with careful, near-documentary precision — Savitribai Phule's portrait stamp, a Women's Day issue, a mounted rider on a horse, a small stamp of two women in traditional dress — small, framed rectangles of color and text set against the rougher, textured surface of the figures who carry them, as if history were being physically handed forward from one generation to the next, each stamp a small, precisely dated fact set against the more open, undated presence of the figures who carry it.

The right half of the canvas completes the postcard device: ruled lines for an address left deliberately blank, a hand-drawn PIN code grid, a Gandhi postage stamp in the corner, and a circular postmark reading "Mumbai" stamped with Marathi text about untouchability as a stain on society. The postcard is addressed to no one in particular, which is the point — the message is meant for whoever receives it, now or later, treating the act of reading the painting as the act of receiving the postcard itself.

Kolapkar builds the three figures from a rough, mottled texture in ochre, blue, and rust, keeping them faceless and anonymous even as the stamps they carry name specific women by name and image, a deliberate contrast between the unnamed messengers and the named history they transmit forward.

The overall palette stays warm and aged, close to old paper and sun-faded ink, reinforcing the sense that this postcard has traveled some distance, and some years, before arriving on the canvas in front of the viewer.

This is a hand-painted acrylic original on canvas, not a reproduction. The stamp details and postmark text reward a closer read once the postcard format itself has been taken in as a whole.

Message sits alongside pieces like Queen Of Heart in Kolapkar's Guest Artist collection, continuing her practice of building a figure's meaning through an attached object rather than through setting alone. Its horizontal format suits a study, hallway, or reading corner where its text and stamp detail can be read up close and returned to.

Pieces like this ask to be looked at slowly, the way an actual postcard would be, one stamp and one line of text at a time, rather than absorbed all at once.
