Sound is a 48" x 48" acrylic original by artist Harshada Kolapkar, and it splits its three figures into two separate registers of attention. At the left, a woman in a yellow sari patterned with pale crescent moons presses a pair of red headphones to her ear with one hand, eyes lowered, a small device held in the other — entirely inside her own private listening, unaware of anything else happening on the canvas around her, absorbed the way headphones tend to close a person off from a shared room.
Behind and to the right, two more women in patterned sarees, one blue and gold, one deep red, stand close together mid-conversation, their attention turned toward each other rather than outward, a second and separate kind of sound running alongside the first without the two ever meeting.
Kolapkar sets both groups against a backdrop divided in two: a soft, mottled grey field scattered with small dark circular marks behind the woman with headphones, and a richer maroon panel patterned with pale fish shapes behind the two talking women, so even the background keeps the two conversations visually apart from one another.
The red headphones are the single brightest, most saturated mark in the painting, functioning almost like a spotlight on the idea the title names — sound made private, carried inward rather than shared outward with the room around her.
All three women wear the same blue flip-flops, a small consistent detail that ties the two separate registers of the painting back into one shared, ordinary moment despite the different directions their attention is pointed, as if they'd simply stepped out together and each drifted into her own world.
This is a hand-painted acrylic original on canvas, not a reproduction. The fish-patterned backdrop and the crescent-moon sari carry fine detail that holds up at close range and shifts subtly with the light.
