Family 1 is a 58" x 22" charcoal original by artist Sumana Dey, the first and widest of a four-part series. A full family group spreads across the horizontal canvas — a mother holding an infant, a man beside her, a young girl gripping the edge of her sari, and a second cluster of figures further along the same wide sheet.
Dey builds every figure from dense, directional cross-hatching rather than outline and fill, a technique that gives the bodies a rounded, sculptural weight more commonly associated with carved relief than works on paper.
The composition reads almost like two related groupings joined into one continuous family, the wide format allowing Dey to place several relationships — a mother and child, a couple, a child reaching for a parent — within a single unbroken scene rather than isolating any one pairing.
Every face in the piece is drawn with lowered or closed eyes, a consistent choice across the series that gives the family an inward, contemplative quality rather than an outward-facing, posed one.
Working entirely in black and white lets Dey concentrate the piece's expressive weight into value and texture — the depth of the hatching, the softness of a cheek versus the folded density of striped fabric — rather than color.
