Family 2 is a 30" x 48" charcoal original by artist Sumana Dey, the second work in her four-part family series. A woman wrapped in a striped covering holds a young boy close to her shoulder at the composition's center, while a bald-headed man and two more figures gather around them, hands resting gently on the group.
This piece sits between the wide, spreading composition of Family 1 and the tighter stacking of Family 4 — five figures held in a balanced vertical cluster, neither as compressed as the smallest works in the series nor as spread out as the widest.
Dey's cross-hatching again does the work of both form and texture: the woman's striped wrap built from alternating hatched bands, the surrounding figures' smooth, rounded shoulders built from tighter, more even strokes, giving the group a quiet variation in surface even within a single monochrome palette.
The child held at shoulder height, gazing outward while the adults around him keep their eyes lowered, gives Family 2 a subtle generational focus — the youngest figure the one point of open, forward attention in an otherwise inward-looking group.
As with the rest of the series, the family unit here isn't posed formally but caught mid-gesture, hands reaching and resting on one another in a way that reads as an ongoing moment rather than a composed portrait.
