Family 4

Family 4 is a 30" x 60" charcoal original by artist Sumana Dey, the tallest canvas in her four-part family series. Five figures are stacked closely within the vertical format — a woman holding a small child at the center, a man beside her, and two more figures reaching in from below, hands resting on the group from either side.

Where Family 1 spreads its figures wide, Family 4 compresses them vertically, the height of the sheet used to stack relationships on top of one another rather than lay them side by side — a structural choice that makes this the most physically enclosed, protective-feeling composition in the series.

Dey's cross-hatching technique remains consistent here, each figure built from directional strokes that give the forms a rounded, carved density, particularly visible in the woman's striped wrap, rendered in alternating bands of light and dark hatching.

The child at the center is the compositional anchor, held at chest height by the central figure while the two lower figures reach up toward the group, their hands and gazes drawing the eye back to that same central point.

As the fourth and tallest work in the series, Family 4 pushes the vertical stacking device furthest, using its full 60-inch height to hold five figures in close, layered proximity rather than spreading them across a wider field.

The tall vertical format suits a stairwell, narrow wall, or entryway, where its height can be appreciated at full scale from a distance.

This is a hand-drawn charcoal original on paper, not a reproduction. Natural variation in hatching density is part of the artist's hand-built technique.

Family 4 can be collected on its own or displayed with Family 1, 2, and 3 to trace how Dey varies the same family theme across four distinct compositions and formats.

Family 4 sits alongside pieces like Family 3 in Dey's Guest Artist collection, part of Dey's consistent approach to family groups, formed from pure tonal contrast rather than outline. Being charcoal on paper, it should be framed under glass with a spacer mount, since direct contact with the glazing can smudge the finer hatching over time. Beyond the spaces already suited to it, Family 4 also works well in a reading nook or quiet corner for a slightly different feel.

It works well as a gift tied to a family milestone — an anniversary, a new home, a new arrival. Family subjects like this one usually say more through posture and closeness between figures than through facial expression.
