Family 3 is a 22" x 30" charcoal original by artist Sumana Dey, the smallest and most intimate canvas in her four-part family series. Where the other three works hold three, four, or five figures, this one narrows to two — a seated pair, one figure's head resting against the other's shoulder, wrapped closely together in a single embrace.
That reduction in figure count changes the register of the piece entirely. Family 1 and Family 4 read as group portraits; Family 3 reads as a single relationship examined closely, the two figures' overlapping arms and folded posture filling nearly the entire frame.
Dey's cross-hatching remains dense and directional here, but at this smaller scale and with fewer figures, the technique's sculptural effect becomes even more pronounced — the rounded weight of the shoulders and folded knees reads almost like a study for a carved relief rather than a drawing.
Both figures keep their eyes closed or lowered, consistent with the rest of the series, but here that inwardness reads as shared quiet between two people rather than a group's collective calm.
The striped textile wrapped around one figure's shoulders and head, rendered in Dey's signature alternating hatching bands, is the piece's only strong pattern, standing out against the otherwise smooth, rounded charcoal forms.
The compact vertical format suits a smaller wall, a reading nook, or a grouping alongside the artist's larger family works, where its quieter scale offers a natural pause between busier pieces.
