Harmony is a 48" x 48" acrylic original by artist Arvind Kolapkar, and its title is built into the painting on more than one level. Two women share an Indian classical stringed instrument, playing in the kind of close coordination the title names directly, while a flock of birds moves through the scene around them, close enough to feel like they're part of the same accord rather than separate from it.
Kolapkar carries the idea of harmony into his color choices as well. A dominant field of deep red and rust covers almost the entire canvas, an intensity that could easily overwhelm on its own. He balances it with small, deliberate blue accents — a hair ornament, a wing, scattered feathers — placed with enough restraint to bring the two temperatures into agreement rather than conflict. The painting's harmony is happening in the color as much as in the music.
The technique behind this is thick, layered acrylic, built up in visible passes rather than blended flat. The instrument's rounded body and the women's overlapping forms come from confident, gestural strokes that favor the feeling of the music over precise anatomical detail.
