The Narrow Channel is a 12" x 12" acrylic original by artist Vinay Mhatre, running a thin teal waterway down through the center of the canvas, dividing grey and pale rose harbor planes on either side.
At the upper edge of the channel, a thick mark of raised white impasto sits like foam, spray, or simply a knot of built-up paint, the single most physically dimensional passage in the piece and the first thing the eye catches before following the channel downward.
To the upper left, a low cluster of triangular rooftops in muted olive and grey suggests a distant settlement, kept small and quiet against the wider, calmer planes that make up most of the composition.
The grey and rose planes flanking the channel are worked with soft tonal variation rather than flat color, giving the impression of overcast light moving unevenly across a wide, still harbor, the tonal shifts subtle enough to notice only after the eye has settled on the channel itself and started tracing its path.
Fine scratched lines run alongside the channel in places, doubling its edges and adding a nervous, hand-drawn quality to what is otherwise a very calm, planar composition. Mhatre lets the rose-toned plane on the right stay slightly warmer than the grey on the left, a quiet asymmetry that keeps the two halves from reading as simple mirror images of each other across the channel.
This is a hand-painted acrylic original on canvas, not a reproduction. The impasto mark at the channel's edge carries genuine raised texture and casts a small shadow depending on the light, standing well above the surrounding flatter paint.
The Narrow Channel sits alongside pieces like Copper Light in Mhatre's Guest Artist collection, sharing his recurring device of a single waterway or line dividing a wider harbor field into two calmer halves. Its square format suits a bedroom, study, or reading nook, where its calm, evenly toned palette can support rather than dominate the space.
Of the water-dividing compositions in this series, this is the narrowest and most deliberate, a single channel asked to carry the whole painting's sense of quiet movement from one still field into the next.
