Nandini at Rest

Nandini at Rest — a sacred cow lies peacefully among pink lotus blooms, her legs folded beneath her in a rare reclining pose within the Pichwai tradition.

Most Pichwai cow stand or walk; this piece instead captures stillness, the cow's body curved gently into a resting position surrounded by full pink lotus flowers. Her gold jewelry and painted markings remain fully traditional, but the pose itself gives the piece a quieter, more contemplative mood than standing compositions typically carry.

A soft rose-pink background surrounds the scene, bordered by the tradition's characteristic repeated patterning, the compact square format keeping the composition intimate and calm.

Color in Pichwai painting rarely aims for realism — reds, golds, teals and deep blues are chosen for their symbolic weight and their ability to hold attention from across a room, not to match the natural world exactly. That confident, deliberate use of color is very much at work here.

This piece suits a meditation corner, bedroom or quiet reading space where its restful mood feels especially fitting. Its soft pink palette pairs naturally with cream, blush and gentle natural light. Its scale and palette have both been chosen to hold their own on a wall without overwhelming the room around them. The canvas texture remains visible beneath the paint, a small detail that photographs rarely capture but that adds real depth in person. Viewed up close, the fine linework and layered color reward a slower look than a quick glance across the room.

Painted entirely by hand by one of our in-house artists, this is a genuine original painting on canvas, carrying visible brushwork, layered color and the surface texture only a real painted piece can offer. It is ready to display with confidence as soon as it arrives.

A thoughtful choice for housewarmings, weddings, anniversaries or festival gifting, it suits anyone drawn to devotional art with a handmade, personal touch.

Each canvas ships with free framing, secure protective packaging and a signed certificate of authenticity, so it's ready to display with confidence as soon as it arrives. To keep the colors looking their best over time, keep the painting out of direct sunlight and dust it occasionally with a soft, dry cloth rather than any liquid cleaner.

A choice of black, brown, gold, silver or white frame is available for this painting, so it can be matched to the rest of your room without extra effort. The frame color is selected at the time of ordering, making the final look easy to plan for.

Available size: 12" x 12" original painting on canvas.
