Beneath the Banyan

Beneath the Banyan is a 21.5" x 15" pen and ink original by artist Umesh Ghadge. A scooter sits parked and fully covered in cloth beneath a banyan tree whose dense curtain of hanging aerial roots fills most of the upper composition, an old metal drum resting on stacked stones beside it.

Ghadge renders the banyan's tangle of roots in dense, overlapping linework, individual strands crossing and knotting into one another with a level of patience that gives the tree real physical presence rather than a simplified backdrop.

The covered scooter itself is rendered with careful attention to the cloth's folds and creases, catching light unevenly across its draped surface, while the wall and gate behind it are worked in flatter, more even stippling that keeps focus on the tree and its parked companions.

The pairing of an ordinary, everyday object — a covered two-wheeler — with the ancient, sprawling form of a banyan tree gives the piece a quiet contrast between the temporary and the enduring, without needing to state that contrast explicitly.

This is a hand-drawn pen and ink original on paper, not a reproduction. The dense root tangle is built up in individually placed, overlapping strokes, part of Ghadge's consistent technique.
