Latent is a 36" x 24" pen and ink original by artist Umesh Ghadge, and it is the most structurally complex piece in his collection. The composition is built from narrow vertical strips, each one containing a different fragment of city imagery — balconies, windows, an airplane silhouette, small figures — assembled side by side into a single continuous drawing.
That fragmentary structure is exactly what the title names: countless individual details held latent within the overall composition, only fully surfacing when a viewer studies one narrow strip at a time rather than taking in the whole piece at a glance.
Ghadge maintains his dense stippled and hatched technique across every strip regardless of its content, so the piece reads as visually unified from a distance even though its underlying content shifts constantly as the eye moves left to right.
Small human figures are placed sparingly throughout the strips, easy to miss among the architectural fragments, rewarding a slow, careful search across the piece's full width.
This collage-like, multi-fragment structure is unique within Ghadge's collection, distinct even from the all-over abstraction of Urban Mindscape 01, since Latent retains recognizable, if fragmented, representational content throughout.
Given its large scale, this piece suits a substantial wall where its full width can be taken in, with repeated closer viewings revealing new fragments each time.
