Still Life is a 10" x 12" pen and ink original by artist Umesh Ghadge, a classical academic subject rendered in his consistent stippled and hatched technique. A rounded ceramic pot sits at the center of the composition, surrounded by a cup, fruit, and folded cloth, all arranged in a traditional still-life grouping.
The pot's curved surface is the drawing's most technically demanding passage, its highlight and shadow built entirely from varying dot density rather than any blended tone, the sphere's roundness achieved purely through the stippling technique's gradual buildup.
Draped fabric surrounds the objects in heavy, deliberate folds, each crease rendered with directional hatching that follows the fabric's actual movement rather than a generic pattern applied uniformly across the surface.
Ghadge includes a small detail resting on the pot's lid, a quiet touch of specificity that keeps the arrangement from reading as a purely generic academic exercise.
Among Ghadge's collection, this piece stands as his most direct engagement with the traditional still-life genre, a deliberate departure from the architectural and street subjects that dominate the rest of his work here.
The compact scale suits a study, dining room, or a grouping with the artist's other smaller works, where the classical subject offers a quieter counterpoint to his busier street scenes.
This is a hand-drawn pen and ink original on paper, not a reproduction. The pot's tonal gradation is built entirely from stippling density, part of Ghadge's consistent technique.
Still Life demonstrates the same patient, additive technique Ghadge applies to Mumbai landmarks, turned here toward the oldest and most traditional subject in drawing.
Still Life sits alongside pieces like Regal in Ghadge's Guest Artist collection, continuing Ghadge's habit of finding order and structure in ordinary city clutter. A slim frame under glass is usually the right call here, since anything heavier tends to compete with the fine ink linework. Beyond the spaces already suited to it, Still Life also works well in a hallway or stairwell landing for a slightly different feel.
Pieces like this tend to be built in stages, and the finished surface still carries visible traces of that process rather than hiding it. Indirect natural light generally shows the surface at its best, and keeping it out of direct, prolonged sun helps the colours hold over time. Being handmade, minor variations in surface and stroke are expected and are part of Ghadge's process, not a defect. As a classical still-life subject, it also suits a more traditional room setting than some of Ghadge's street and architectural studies.
