Wai Wada is a 16" x 12" pen and ink original by artist Umesh Ghadge. A traditional wada — the courtyard-style mansion associated with old Maharashtrian towns — stands with its sloped, tiled roof and timber-framed upper story, a single figure walking past on the street below giving the building a sense of scale and continued daily use.
Wai, the town named in the title, is known for exactly this kind of heritage residential architecture along the Krishna river, and Ghadge's drawing treats the building as a specific, standing structure rather than a generic old house.
Fine stippling builds the roof tiles and stone lower walls with real material distinction — the tiles rendered in short, directional strokes suggesting their overlapping rows, the stone below in denser, more textured dotting.
The small attached porch and second-story projecting window are picked out with particular care, architectural details specific to this style of building that a less attentive study might simplify or omit.
This piece pairs naturally with Wai Ghat elsewhere in Ghadge's collection, the two works together documenting different corners of the same heritage town.
The compact scale suits a study, hallway, or a grouping with the artist's other heritage architecture pieces, where the shared subject and stippled technique tie the works together.
This is a hand-drawn pen and ink original on paper, not a reproduction. The roof tile and stone textures are built up in distinct stippling patterns, part of Ghadge's consistent technique.
Wai Wada treats an ordinary, still-standing heritage house with the same careful documentation Ghadge gives to Mumbai's grandest landmarks.
Wai Wada sits alongside pieces like Wai Ghat 01 in Ghadge's Guest Artist collection, continuing Ghadge's habit of finding order and structure in ordinary city clutter. A slim frame under glass is usually the right call here, since anything heavier tends to compete with the fine ink linework. Beyond the spaces already suited to it, Wai Wada also works well in a covered veranda or sit-out for a slightly different feel.
Pieces like this tend to be built in stages, and the finished surface still carries visible traces of that process rather than hiding it. Indirect natural light generally shows the surface at its best, and keeping it out of direct, prolonged sun helps the colours hold over time. Being handmade, minor variations in surface and stroke are expected and are part of Ghadge's process, not a defect. Pieces tied to a specific named place, like this one from the heritage town of Wai, tend to appeal especially to collectors with a personal connection to that region.
