Regal is an 18" x 12" pen and ink original by artist Umesh Ghadge, named directly after Mumbai's landmark Art Deco cinema whose signage is clearly legible across the building's facade. The theatre's distinctive stepped facade and vertical fin details are rendered in dense stippled and hatched linework, immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with the building.
In the street below, a bus, cars, and a substantial crowd of pedestrians move past the cinema, rendered with slightly looser, faster linework than the building itself, keeping the architecture as the clear subject while grounding the scene in an active, ordinary street moment.
Ghadge's stippling is worked on a toned paper here rather than pure white, giving the piece a warmer, slightly aged tone that suits the cinema's decades-old Art Deco character.
The building's vertical signage lettering is picked out with particular clarity against the more atmospheric stippled sky behind it, ensuring the cinema's identity reads immediately even from a distance.
This portrait of a named, specific Mumbai landmark sits alongside CST elsewhere in Ghadge's collection, both pieces documenting the city's built heritage with equal attention to the street life happening in front of it.
The compact scale suits a study, media room, or a grouping with the artist's other Mumbai landmark studies, where the shared subject and toned paper tie the pieces together.
This is a hand-drawn pen and ink original on paper, not a reproduction. The warm-toned paper and dense stippling are consistent with Ghadge's technique across this collection.
Regal names its subject as plainly as the cinema's own sign does, giving a piece of Mumbai's cinema history the same careful documentation as its railway terminus.
Regal sits alongside pieces like On the way in Ghadge's Guest Artist collection, part of Ghadge's patient, structured pen-and-ink studies of Mumbai's overlooked corners. As a pen and ink drawing on paper, it suits a slim, simple frame under glass that lets the linework read clearly without competing for attention. Beyond the spaces already suited to it, Regal also works well in a home office or study for a slightly different feel.
Works like this one are built up gradually in layers, with the final surface holding the marks of that process rather than smoothing them away. Natural, indirect light tends to bring out the surface texture best; direct sun for long periods should be avoided so the colour stays true over time. As a handmade original, small variations in texture and brushwork are part of the piece rather than a flaw, and are consistent with how Ghadge works across this collection.
