Crimson Current is a 20" x 60" mixed media original by artist Sanjay Sabale, one of six tall, narrow panels in his abstract series. Red and orange pigment dominates the canvas top to bottom, a small pale blue and white flag-like form breaking the red near the top, and a swirl of blue moving through the maroon-toned middle register.
That blue swirl is the piece's clearest sense of motion — a current running against the grain of the otherwise still, dense red field, giving the panel its title even within a palette that stays warm throughout.
Toward the base, a streak of dark green cuts along the right edge of the canvas, the only passage of cool, saturated color outside the central blue swirl, closing the composition on a different note than it opened.
Sabale's pouring technique keeps the red and orange in constant, subtle variation across the panel's length, darker maroon tones surfacing in the middle where the blue current passes through, lighter orange returning toward the base.
The tall, narrow proportions of this panel and its five companions in the series are used consistently to isolate a single vertical movement of color, rather than the wider compositions found in Sabale's square-format abstracts.
The tall vertical format suits a narrow wall, stairwell, or a grouping with its companion panels, where several can be hung together to form a wider composition.
This is a hand-made mixed media original on canvas, not a reproduction. Natural variation in the pigment's pooling is inherent to the process and part of each piece's individual character.
Crimson Current holds its warmth throughout, the blue swirl at its center reading as a current passing through rather than a color competing with the red around it.
