Sunrise Fragment is a 20" x 60" mixed media original by artist Sanjay Sabale, one of six tall, narrow panels in his abstract series. A rounded, glowing yellow form sits at the very top of the composition, bright and concentrated, before the canvas gives way to olive green through its middle and a cooler blue-grey toward the base.
That top-to-bottom movement from concentrated light to muted ground is what gives the piece its title — not a full sunrise, but a single held fragment of one, cropped to its most essential gesture within the tall, narrow format.
Sabale's pouring technique lets the yellow bleed downward into the green below it, the two colors meeting without a hard edge, while small rust-red rectangular passages break up the middle register with a contained, more deliberate mark.
The tall, narrow proportions of this panel and its five companions in the series are used consistently to isolate a single vertical movement of color, rather than the wider, more spreading compositions found in Sabale's square-format abstracts.
This pouring technique, consistent across Sabale's abstract works, produces results that can't be fully planned in advance — the pigment's own behavior as it settles and dries is as much a part of the final image as any deliberate mark.
The tall vertical format suits a narrow wall, stairwell, or a grouping with its companion panels, where several can be hung together to form a wider composition.
This is a hand-made mixed media original on canvas, not a reproduction. Natural variation in the pigment's pooling is inherent to the process and part of each piece's individual character.
Sunrise Fragment holds a single moment of light at its top edge, letting the rest of the tall canvas absorb and mute it going down.
