Smoke Over Embers is a 30" x 36" mixed media original by artist Sanjay Sabale. A dense field of deep red, orange, and black pigment fills most of the canvas, while a soft, pale grey-blue form drifts across the lower right, its edges diffuse and cloud-like against the darker, denser color beneath it.
That contrast between the settled, warm intensity of the background and the loose, pale form moving across it gives the piece its title — the sense of something drifting over a field that still holds its heat beneath the surface.
Sabale's pouring technique lets the red and orange pigments bleed into one another with genuine unpredictability, dark passages breaking through in places like the last visible glow within a bed of ash.
The pale form itself is worked with a softer touch than the surrounding field, its edges feathered rather than sharply poured, distinguishing it clearly as something moving over the surface rather than embedded within it.
This pouring technique, consistent across Sabale's abstract works, produces results that can't be fully planned in advance — the pigment's own behavior as it settles and dries is as much a part of the final image as any deliberate mark.
The vertical format suits a study, office, or a grouping alongside the artist's other abstract works, where the shared poured technique ties the pieces together as a series.
