Nostalgia is a 58" x 41.5" acrylic original by artist Sanjay Sabale, the largest of his titled figurative works. A woman in traditional dress, carrying a round vessel balanced on her head, holds a tambourine-like drum in one hand while a dramatic sweep of pale, striped hair flows out behind her across nearly half the canvas.
That flowing hair is the piece's most striking device — rendered in long, wind-swept strokes that carry the eye across the full width of the composition, giving a still, standing figure the sense of movement and passage that the title's backward-looking mood calls for.
Sabale sets the figure against a saturated green field broken by an angular red shape behind her shoulder, the warm red reading almost like a memory or afterimage pressing in behind the more solidly grounded green.
