Emerald Undertow is a 30" x 36" mixed media original by artist Sanjay Sabale, part of his abstract body of work. A dense field of green and gold pigment covers most of the canvas, pulled and pooled toward a dark, near-black void at its center, as though the color itself is being drawn under.
Sabale builds this piece through poured and layered pigment rather than brushed application, letting the paint's own movement create the marbled, organic patterning that spreads unevenly across the surface.
Small, isolated marks break the green field's dominance: a cluster of warm red-orange in the upper portion, a patch of cool blue in the lower left corner — brief interruptions that keep the eye moving rather than settling into the green alone.
The dark central pool is the piece's gravitational center, its edges uneven and organic, reading less like a shape placed on the canvas and more like something the surrounding color has genuinely receded from.
This pouring technique, consistent across Sabale's abstract works, produces results that can't be fully planned in advance — the pigment's own behavior as it settles and dries is as much a part of the final image as any deliberate mark.
The vertical format suits a study, office, or a grouping alongside the artist's other abstract works, where the shared poured technique ties the pieces together as a series.
This is a hand-made mixed media original on canvas, not a reproduction. Natural variation in the pigment's pooling is inherent to the process and part of each piece's individual character.
Emerald Undertow rewards a slow look at its edges and margins, where the small red and blue interruptions to the green field are easy to miss at a glance.
