Before the Rains

Before the Rains is a 10x14 watercolor original by artist Nandkishor Shinde, a large tree in golden late-season leaf standing over a dirt track, with village rooftops, palm trees, and small figures in the middle distance.

The tree's golden, late-season foliage is built from warm yellow and ochre washes, a clear signal of the dry-season light the title points to. The village rooftops and palm trees in the distance are kept soft and hazy, letting the foreground tree remain the clear focal point.

The overall mood is dry and warm, capturing the particular light of the season just before the monsoon breaks. Small figures in the middle distance are reduced to simple color marks, enough to suggest daily activity without competing with the tree above them.

Before the Rains reflects his consistent interest in ordinary village and coastal life, rendered through loose washes rather than tight, literal illustration. It belongs to a wider group of 20 watercolors from Shinde's Konkan and Pune-region work, several sharing this same loose, atmospheric technique. Its golden, dry-season palette connects it to Golden Walls, both capturing warm, late-day light before the monsoon arrives.

Since it's on paper, a simple frame under UV-protective glass with a mount is the safest way to display it and keep the colors from drifting over time. At 10x14, it's a comfortable mid-scale piece, easy to place above furniture or within a grouped wall arrangement.

Before the Rains would suit a home living or dining space, where its scale and palette can anchor the room without overwhelming it. Its quiet, everyday subject also makes it a considered gift for someone with a personal connection to the Konkan coast or Maharashtra's villages.

Shinde's watercolors favor atmosphere and light over sharp detail, letting the paper and pigment do much of the emotional work. Natural, indirect light shows the washes at their clearest; direct sun for long periods should be avoided so the paper and pigment don't fade. As a handmade original on paper, small variations in wash and edge are part of the piece rather than a flaw, consistent with how Shinde works across this collection.

Before the Rains holds onto a particular, dry-season warmth just ahead of the monsoon's arrival. The overall composition captures a specific seasonal window, the kind of light that shifts quickly once the rains actually begin. It works well grouped with other golden-toned pieces from this release, though it also stands alone comfortably.
