Tied to the Bank is a 10x14 watercolor original by artist Nandkishor Shinde, a cluster of wooden fishing boats roped to a tidal shore, their hulls in red, ochre, and blue against a hazy line of coastal hills.
The boat hulls are the most saturated color in the composition, a cluster of red, ochre, and blue against a comparatively pale, hazy shoreline and sky. The ropes tying the boats to shore are picked out in fine, deliberate lines, a small structural detail that grounds the otherwise loose, wet washes around them.
The overall mood is one of stillness after activity, boats resting rather than actively working. The hazy, layered hills in the background are built from progressively lighter washes, a simple but effective way to suggest real atmospheric distance.
Tied to the Bank reflects his loose, wet-on-wet watercolor technique, letting pigment bleed and settle rather than controlling every edge. This piece is one of 20 watercolors in the same release, drawn from Shinde's travels through Konkan villages, the coast, and Pune's countryside and city streets. It shares its Konkan coastal setting with Boats Along the Bay, Currents and Nets, and Catching Gold, four related studies of the same shoreline.
